Miri Master Plan

Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia

DESCRIPTION:

Miri City Center master plan is the first comprehensively designed environmentally sustainable city in East Malaysia. The master plan covers over 600 acres of waterfront that is adjacent to the existing city of Miri and includes: a new market hall, residential district, government administrative center, and new commercial and retail destinations for the region.

The master plan creates a strategically branded urban place that is based on regional urban typologies, including: authentic streets, plazas, parks, and urban building typologies. The plan also establishes four key development districts – Waterfront District, Market District, City Front District, and River Park District.

This new urban downtown is a carefully crafted blend of traditional and contemporary design elements. The plan will establish a strong urban connection to the ocean waterfront that historic Miri never was able to realize, by creating an active waterfront retail district that will become a regional destination for Malaysia. The plan is focused on creating a walkable, pedestrian-focused urban development pattern that enhances the connections between buildings and streets and promotes a new generation of sustainable urban economy for Malaysia.
