San Jose, California USA
San Pedro Square Market Hall opened in 2011 to become San Jose’s first public market in recent times. The project won the AIA Santa Clara Valley Chapter Design Merit Award, 2012. It was also the winner of the San Jose Business Journal’s Community Impact Award. The project is the result of a public/private partnership that developed as a catalyst for the emerging high-density urban neighborhood.
JRDV recognized that providing alternative products and services not found in chain stores would be a means to differentiate a new retail venue and create an urban anchor. The Market Hall establishes a dynamic, ever-changing focal point for San Jose’s newest downtown residential community, thus leading to a stronger more unique civic identity. The project includes the adaptive reuse of two buildings and the new construction of a third. Extensive outdoor seating areas surround the Peralta Adobe, which was built in 1797 and is the oldest building in northern California. The project is adjacent to the farmer’s market and takes advantage of an underutilized parking structure across the street.
