Valby Spinderiet

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen’s Valby Spinderiet is an adaptive reuse of an old cotton spinning mill that has been converted to a vibrant mixed-use development, including ground floor retail.

Along with ak83’s Slotsarkaderne in Hillerød, the Valby Spinderiet, is the new retail center in all of Denmark that is the most thoroughly integrated with its historic surrounding community.

The project incorporates buildings originally part of a 1905 historic Danish Cotton Spinning Mill.  A new urban fabric of streets and squares is established between the historic spinning hall and the kiln buildings.  The public walkways are glass-covered, though open air, and thus unheated.

The project includes neighborhood-serving and destination-serving retail shops on the ground floor, with residences and offices located above.

Located close to the S-Tog train station, the project is a major social focus for the Valby district of Copenhagen.
